A food cooperative based in Miami County, Ohio

Stone’s Throw Market Co-op is a food cooperative based in Miami County, Ohio.  We believe in a movement that focuses on supporting our local economy by providing safe food from farms that we can trust.

Our mission is to provide healthy, safe food that you can trust – from a nearby farm or local source, whenever possible.

One day, we’ll build a new brick and mortar store. Until then, we buy our food from the Stone’s Throw Market Co-op in the Troy Meat Shop, 502 Garfield Ave., Troy, OH.   Online shopping is being designed and will be coming soon!  (see map)

Everyone will be welcome to shop at our future brick and mortar store, but member-owners of our cooperative don’t have to wait! Every week, we can shop in the Troy Meat Shop.

Our group has been supporting our online grocery since February 2010, and we’ve already kept over $143,000 of our food dollars in the local and state economies. Our local farms are expanding and our families are eating healthier than ever. We’ve also made lots of investments in our systems. We welcome new members who will join us in creating the change we wish to see.

Our organizing process

Stone’s Throw Market is unique because of our innovative organizing process. We’ve been calling it the “Miami River Model” of cooperative organizing: creating an income-generating activity (the online grocery, soon to be ready) to support our start-up expenses, establish real economic relationships with local producers and businesses, and hire a full-time Project Organizer.

Our people

As a Co-op, we are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that is elected by our member-ownership. Our Board is responsible for the strategic direction and financial stability of our cooperative. Our Board currently includes seven members (read more about our Board).

Our Organizing Team is the group of volunteers, Board members, and staff that powers our cooperative organizing effort. Everyone interested in getting involved with the effort is welcome to join us for our bi-weekly check-in meetings. We do our best to keep them to an hour or less, and it’s a fun way to stay in the loop and meet other member-owners!  We focus our discussion every meeting on updates from specific project teams.   Questions? Our future brick and mortar storefront

Together, we’re starting a new, community-owned grocery. Membership gives us a chance to work together and create the change we wish to see. (Read more about membership)

Our grocery sales support organizing costs for the cooperative.  Co-ops are democracies, so every member-owner will have a voice in deciding where the Stone’s Throw Market retail storefront will be.

We hope you’ll join us in creating a uniquely friendly place to shop, gather, and celebrate the power of cooperation!
